Jason Goemaat's solution:

The program I created basically just loaded and showed the map and let you enter a string.  It just showed all steps up to your current position in the string as empty boxes and the first 20 steps after your current position in the string as various levels of gray.  This gives a better indicator of where the ship has been and is going and lets you modify the string in real time.
